Trigger Point Injection
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been told that I might need to have trigger point injections by my consultant at the pain clinic and I just wondered how they were done, if they are painful and if they actually do work and help the pain! At least I can then have a bit of an idea before my next appointment! Thanks for any responses that I get!

When you have pain 24/7 to me any pain relief is a godsend I get 3-4 days relief which is more than any fibro med has done for me. It allows be to get my groceries and other hard chores for me done so I can live independently. The injections for me are a godsend and sometimes it can help to break the cycle of pain. Fibro is complicated. Gentle hugs

So glad I ran across this thread. At one time I really wanted to try trigger point injections until I realized that fibromyalgia is a CNS problem. If you have fibromyalgia, injecting an irritant into a muscle knot is not going to have fibromyalgia go away. Why put yourself through unnecessary therapies that will not solve the overall cause?

Thought I would update how I feel today after the injections. I ended up taking a Ambien so I could sleep last night. This morning I actually feel better, very little stiffness, the pain from last night is either gone or tolerable this morning. As for my back which is why he did the injections, I'm not in constant pain and spasms, But there are certain movements I can make that will cause a spasm, just not as bad as I was having. I also feel like I have a fist sized knot in my mid back where the spasms are. The majority of any pain I do have is at a 1-2, I have not felt pain that low since early January before my cancer treatments started. I do still have some pain that is higher in the tops of my shoulder and neck, my right arm and hand and both knees. My mom even tried to massage out the knot in my back, she could feel and said it was like a rock and we were both afraid of her pressing hard enough to loosen it.
I am still not sire this relief today is worth it. That shot hurt too much and the flare last night was a miserable one. If I get relief for 3-4 weeks or longer, it would probably be worth it. Anything less, no it won't be worth it.

I have had several types. Cortisone first and it did nothing for me. I could not even sit on my couch after words. If felt as though I had a lump on fluid in my shoulder muscles and it was really sore. I had local anesthetic injections in my neck, shoulder and spine. It lasted about 35 minutes and then again it was like liquid fire in my muscles. I most recently tried Botox. It was the most effective. It really calmed down my "background noise" achiness so I could power through my physio therapy. I unfortunately had to pay out of pocket because Botox has only been recognized as a treatment for chronic migraines. It helped me and didn't give me any issues after Would I do it again? probably not. It is way too expensive here. Hope this helps.

I stand by my accolades of trigger point injections. They work far more often for me than not, and they last a little less than a month.
