Allergic Reactions

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone seen their allergies increase since diagnosis? I've never been allergic to food or meds and suddenly everything is setting off hives and throat swelling.

Members confirmed experiencing a significant increase in allergic reactions after their autoimmune or fibromyalgia diagnosis, with many developing new allergies to foods like soy, seafood, dairy, and medications they previously tolerated without issue. Several members shared that they now take daily antihistamines like Benadryl or Claritin to manage frequent hives, throat swelling, and other reactions, with one member noting that allergy tests often come back normal despite clear symptoms. A recurring theme was the unpredictable, cyclical nature of these allergic flares, often worsening during disease flare-ups, leaving members frustrated by the lack of clear triggers and effective treatments.

Absolutely. I am now allergic to triple antibiotic (really!) Ace inhibitors, laundry detergent and softener I now use scent and color free. My seasonal allergies seem to have been enhanced also.

I've never had an allergy until my RA/fibromyalgia dx. Now I'm crazy allergic to soy and I'd be willing to bet a bunch of other stuff. Tried a weight loss program and broke out in hives head to toe from their shakes. It's weird

I go through bouts of severe to mild allergic reactions. I will suffer greatly for a couple years and then it almost stops. I have been hospitalized with anaphylaxis due to medications. Medications that I can now take again. I tell people I am basically allergic to breathing. I started to realize this was due to my flare periods. I hate that time because I never know what is going to set it off. During these times I also take an antihistamine regularily to calm my reactions. This disease is bad because you suffer from things you wouldn't think would be fibro related but they are. My fibro is highly managed at this point but I know the flare can be around any corner. The next stressful event and BAM we are off to the fibro races.

I have had allergies since I moved to SC in 1974. Allergic to pollen some plants, coding and sulfer. Who knows since we have fibro it could be a problem alot of us have.

I just took an allergy test for food allergies but I'm now allergic to Flexeril and Mobic. I'm reacting to random things, seafood and soy and maybe dairy when I've never had any allergies before.
