Has anyone tried the protocol for overcoming fibro by Dr. Teitelbaum as described in his book "The Fatigue and fibromyalgia solution"? Any success stories?
@A MyFibroTeam Member I couldn't hurt to try it. I get side effects from even supplements so I gave up on buying them. (Spent a small fortune and couldn't tolerate them). I do still take Vitamin D though. One thing I did appreciate about Dr. Teitelbaum is that he doesn't tell you to ditch your medications. He even recommends which ones to take to help you sleep.
Hi Angelika,
My Pain Doctor uses his general protocol to treat patients here in Canada and most pain clinics and doctors generally follow his method of the shine protocol. S - sleep , H - hormonal support, I - infections , N - nutritional support, and E - exercise. The book is getting a bit old, but these are still considered the major problems that have to be addressed in FM. I would also add counselling/mental health as many of us have anxiety and depression. Pacing goes along with Sleep/rest. I have seen many people on programmes very similar to Teitelbaum's, and using many of the supplements he suggests. Most haven't been 'cured' but I've seen many people improve quite a bit using this method.
@A MyFibroTeam Member, you make a lot of sense here. I'm always cautious about anything being a "cure". And There are a lot of people on the internet just trying to profit from other people's miseries. Dr. Teitelbaum struck me as sincere, as he's a dr who has trying to help fibro patients for 40 years. And you don't have to buy his supplements, I bought equivalent products at my local health food store. Still quite expensive!
I haven't tried anything new in a while, so I thought I'd give it shot for a few months, to see what it does. I definitely don't expect to be cured, if there is such a thing with fibro, but it would be so nice to have just a bit more energy. With my meds, the pain is manageable for the most part, but I hate the constant feeling of illness and exhaustion. There's always so much more I'd like to do. Give me more spoons!!!
Another thing...As far as I know, Fibromyalgia is a lifelong illness at this point. Anyone who claims they can "cure" you, in my opinion may be a snake oil salesman. The people who claim they had Fibro and cured themselves, I have to wonder if it was Fibromyalgia they had or something else.
I agree with the comments in your conversation Morehope and Angelika. I had the same problems with many supplements as well - we are all so sensitive they can affect us as much as meds. But Teitelbaum's SHINE protocol and supplement recommendations are still very useful. Besides the ones for sleep, his recommendations for helping with energy are very useful and worth a try - d-ribose, L carnitine, co-q-10 etc. When I first got fibro, I swear I only got to work because of the co-q-10. And a few of my friends have taken d-ribose for years and won't give it up for anything
