Fibromyalgia & Osteoarthritis

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Can fibromyalgia amplify the pain of other conditions?I have a question about pain. I've had osteoarthritis in my knees forover 10 years but just got diagnosed a couple of years ago and in 2015 I got diagnosed with fibro. It seems lately my knees have been in so much more pain than before. Can fibromyalgia make the pain from osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel, feel even more painful?

Members overwhelmingly confirmed that fibromyalgia can amplify pain from other conditions like osteoarthritis, with many describing how fibro seems to target areas already affected by joint damage and trigger points, making existing pain significantly worse during flares or in cold or damp weather. Several members shared practical strategies that have helped them cope, including combining ibuprofen with prescription pain medication, using heat therapy like heating pads or electric blankets, gentle walking even when difficult, and muscle relaxers, though many acknowledged that managing constant pain remains an ongoing challenge. A recurring theme was the frustration of convincing doctors that new or worsening pain was not just fibromyalgia, with some finding relief only after surgeries like knee replacements, yet still experiencing fibro flares in those areas.

I have had fibro for many years but when the BIG A decided to make itself known...my pain has been more and more. Was very hard to convince my doctor that the pain in my knees was not fibro -- an x-ray confirmed degenerative osteoarthritis. For me the fibro has magnified the arthritis pain......

When I was hurting my worst, I would walk all over the house. I use a walker, so it was a little awkward, but it did help. After a while the pain became low enough that I wasn't going to scream or cry. Doesn't make it go away, just less enough to get by. I'm on a couple of really strong pain killers and a couple of muscle relaxers. And I still use heat from electric blankets or heating pads to help with pain when I'm laying down.

Yes, fibro often includes hyperalgesia (excess pain to negative stimulus) including pain from other disorders, I believe
