I was referred to rheumatology for them to either rule out/confirm rheumatoid arthritis, as this was cleared, he diagnosed fibromyalgia due to symptoms and length of time of illness. He also referred me to occupational health.
My PCP referred me to mine for the "official" diagnosis. Now I see her every 4-6 months for followup.
I went to a rheumatologist to be diagnosed and started cymbalta for pain. However, then switched to my regular physician. I'm waiting for the neurologists to take over as fibromyalgia is a disorder of the central nervous system.
I was referred for the same reason to rule out RA. After 7 years of dealing with other dr's that said I was basically crazy as a loon. The rheumatologist is who diagnosed the fibromyalgia.
My GP referred me to rheumatology to confirm that it was not lupus, RA, or another disease that can be seen through bloodwork. The rheumatologist is also the one who performed the tests that are part of the fibro diagnostic process as well as checked me for hypermobility. He is also the one who presrcibed Cymbalta and Tramadol. I know see him as needed or annually for a check-up on my progress and symptoms. My GP does not deal with my fibro at all. It sounds like it is different depending on where you live and maybe even individually based on the doctor. My rheumatologist is very, very kind and helpful. I get the feeling he does not often simply discontinue a patient after giving them a diagnosis of any sort unless it is out of his expertise.
