Do any of you women feel like not only are you not taken seriously because of your diagnosis, but also because you're a woman presenting with pain? I'm curious how often others feel like this is an issue with your care. I've started to have anxiety about going to the doctor, because I've been written off by medical professionals so many times.

Personally, I can list all the complaints and issues that my family doctor didn't take seriously for years, that taken seriously, would have led me to a… read more

Members connected over the frustrating experience of not being taken seriously by doctors, particularly as women with pain, with many sharing that it took years and multiple specialists before receiving proper diagnoses like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or brain tumors. Several members offered practical strategies that helped them advocate for better care, including switching to recommended doctors, bringing a witness or nurse advocate to appointments, and refusing to accept dismissive treatment. A recurring theme was the importance of persistence and self-advocacy despite being dismissed as too young, looking healthy, or being blamed for symptoms due to weight, with many finding relief only after changing providers.

I was not taken seriously for a year and a half. I have been to about four hospitals, talked to about 10 specialist and finally when I switched over two doctors I got diagnosed with a brain tumor and then fibromyalgia. These doctors can be asshole when it comes to many things. One of the ways I was not taken serious was because I "looked" ok and I was "too young to have anything wrong with me. Now look. I do not think things would be as bad as they are if doctors took us seriously from our first complaints.

I am blessed with a good doctor. She has a lot of common sense and doesn't rush into a lot of drug therapy. We try supplements and stretching, massage and acupuncture.

I had the same problem with my old family doctor. She always treated me like I was a nut case making things up like a hypochondriac. I left her office crying more than once! The last time she made me cry about 5 years ago I switched Family Doctors and now I have a Dr that treats me with respect and takes me serious. She has helped me more than any other Dr even Specialist like my old Rheumatologist. He was useless and had a bad bed side manor of always seeming grouchy! I am so thankful for my doctor now she really tries to help with all issues! Don't let a doctor disrespect you! Get another one!

I do think it depends on your Doctor. Mine was similar and it took me nearly two years to get her to take me seriously and send me to a specialist. The trouble is, because I am overweight, everything is always blamed on that.
