Members rallied around someone facing disciplinary action for calling off work three times in six months due to fibromyalgia, sharing experiences with workplace policies that penalize chronic illness and offering strategic guidance on navigating a difficult system. Several members emphasized the importance of formally declaring a disability with HR to gain legal protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act, filing intermittent FMLA to protect individual sick days without losing vacation time, obtaining detailed doctor's notes that document symptoms and diagnosis, and carefully reviewing company policies in writing rather than relying solely on what HR says verbally. A recurring theme was the cruel bind of needing to work for income and insurance while being punished for the very symptoms that make working so difficult, with members sharing stories of unsupportive managers, impossible attendance policies, and the emotional toll of choosing between health and financial survival.

You have to inform your employer that you HAVE a disability before the disability act applies to you. My employer had an official form to do that.

I had good manager/directors that were willing to work with me, flex my hours as needed, so that I could work fulltime. That all changed in 2011 with the new director. ZERO cooperation, be here or else. The stress tore me apart.

To file an EEOC complaint you are required to exhaust all of your employer's internal complaint processes. They dragged that out until I had worked myself into the ground before I finally went off sick long-term. I've been off most of this year, but my doctor fears that I pushed my body too far and that recovery may not be possible.

Educate yourself about your company's policies and procedures. Don't just ask HR, get the documents and read them. HR can tell you anything.

They can't make you take personal time when you are sick. That is what sick time is for. You need to call someone about that. You also need to tell them what is going on with you. I don't know everything that is wrong with you, but it might be time to apply for disability. Do you have disability insurance at work? If so talk to your doctor and apply for it. What kind of work do you do? I am sending prayers your way. Feel free to contact me personally. Good Luck!

It's ridiculous. Especially in healthcare. I worked in enriching homes when the ms hit 10 years ago! I quit on my own,out of the fear that I would hurt someone, get diets mixed up, or something. That can really hurt someone. But they were pissed because they were short a cook. Um duh ppl, not safe for me to be in the kitchen.. I couldn't walk straight, remember name, going blind, going numb, having a fun old time falling apart back here... and ur worried about looking an employee. Gee I sure can feel the love guys. Screw you and filed for disability. And a year later got it.. then... 8 years later I have fibro too... happy, happy, joy, joy
