Family Members Thinking They Understand
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

A big part of fibro is the emotional part and feeling frustrated that family and friends don't know what you are talking about or how you feel. My mother is suffering from depression and PTSD. When talking to her about how you really can't understand what is going on inside a fibro's person body/mind she gets very defensive and upset claiming that she understands how I feel because of what she is going through. Now I understand that people with invisible illnesses can somewhat understand how… read more

At least she is trying to understand , and she obviously understands suffering as she has her own health problems even if they are not the same as yours, you have some common ground. I have to constantly remind myself that the people around me are not psychic and they don't know how I am feeling unless I tell them. Try to keep the communication open with her. I used to always put a brave face on and keep every thing to myself but it doesn't help.

I think we all deal with this. We each deal with our pain and symptoms differently, and we all have our own tweeks that makes our Fibro ours. But an ear to listen is always something good to have for you and to be.

I totally understand exactly what you're saying. Fibromyalgia isn't really "pain"...but a deep rooted...annoying...burning...bone chilling ache that nothing can seem to help. I remember telling my doctor it literally felt like someone had a match to my bones and was keeping it in one spot....x's ten. Or the famous...I know how you feel my bones hurt too...statement.
Now...I just listen and let them know...that this is different and I'm not going to compare whose pain is worse. When I say that my bones hurt now...my family is more understanding and don't stress me out or make me feel bad if I can't go places or participate in events as I used to. Like my doctor told me...fibromyalgia is a very unforgiving disorder to have.

I think everyone is going through something of their own, and they wouldn't understand unless they have gone through it. We all suffer from something in this life, whether it be illnes, loving an addict, the loss of a child, addiction, poverty, the list goes on and on. We get Fibro. Unless you love it, you just can't understand. That's why there are support groups. People like to talk to people who can relate. It is unfortunate that you can't get support from your Mom, but it sounds like she has a lot to deal with herself unfortunately. Is there a local Fibro support group in your community? What about on FB? You can always come here to vent also :)
