Members connected over the shared experience of swallowing difficulties, with many describing sensations of pills getting stuck, feeling a lump in the throat, choking while drinking, or needing to double swallow to get food down. Several members shared practical strategies that have helped them, including drinking plenty of water with pills, eating bread or banana to help unstick medication, using prescription oral rinses or saliva-stimulating medications for dry mouth, and advocating for a swallowing test if symptoms are severe. A recurring theme was the belief that swallowing problems are fibromyalgia-related, possibly due to muscle swelling, nerve issues, or anxiety, though some members also noted medication side effects like dry mouth or anatomical factors as contributing causes.

I have trouble swallowing too sometimes and its not from any meds because it has happened when I've been on them and when I have been off them. It feels like I have a lump of goobers in my throat. I usually just drink a large amount of water very quickly and it kinda pushes it through. just a quick fix though, it'll always come back. I just chalked it up to Post-Nasal drip which I've had since I was a kid. who knows, maybe it is Fibro.

I have trouble swallowing sometimes! Didn't even consider it would be realated. I am on no meds for Fibro so it's not from meds. I have had Fibro for many years and had to give up on the synthetic pills, I don't tolerate them well, I take a holistic approach. Not being able to swallow is an odd feeling, almost panic stuck like feeling!

I just had my esophagus stretched for the 2nd time in about 5 years. You should probably see a Gastro Dr. I get pills stuck......then I have to eat bread or banana to un-stick it. Nobody else in my family has this problem so I have to think it's the Fibro.

@A MyFibroTeam Member, if it is that severe, I would ask your doctor if he would consider scheduling a swallowing test. My sister went through the same thing. I would also advocate and do the research beforehand and find some good medical websites with information about fibromyalgia. I'm almost positive that I have seen difficulty swallowing is a symptom/problem but it's been a long time since I've checked that. Google it fibromyalgia AND difficulty swallowing. I hope that helps!!!
