Has Anyone Gone Or Going To A Functional Medicine Dr?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm curious about functional medicine. I see I have some around Nashville. Just wondering if anyone has gone or is going to a functional medicine Dr or Natural Dr something different than the 5 minute pill pushing doctors who don't give a crap! Ok, I'm done..😕

I went to a naturopath for about a year and followed all of her recommendations to the letter. Im talking a new diet, bags of vitamins, supplements, and homeopathic remedies. She promised to cure me. Every visit involved changing my “remedies” and supplements, meaning I paid for all the new items. All that I purchased from her. Every appointment I told her how I was not feeling any better, and she promised to cure me if i just took these new vitamins and bottles of homeopathic remedies. And repeat.
After a year I quit. I will never try it again. Im not saying she didnt believe she was trying to help, but she wasnt. Beware of anyone who promises to cure you, as no medical professional can guarantee how we react to any treatment. Find someone you trust. For anyone who feels It works, thats great and Im so happy for them. But I realized how easy it is for someone to make false promises and convince people to spend money on things in the hopes of a cure.

Thats right margaret99. Just because one person responds well to something does not mean the rest if us will. And I am not intending to put natural doctors in the same category as one who practices homeopathy. I gave it an honest chance. But at the end of the day I feel its just water. If I were looking for a natural medicine practitioner, i would steer clear of those who use homeopathy and those who promise cures.

Well, there’s a brilliant doctor. She was wheelchair bound for 4 years. She developed The Wahls Protocol by: Terry Wahls, she healed herself, she has a. Great website and has a newsletter, books. She has recommended special healing foods and a healthy lifestyle, my old masseuse referred me to her. Check her out and get the book, she offers affordable online classes. She basically created Functional Medecine. Please let me know how it goes, she also has many YouTube videos!

I have no intention to offend anyone or dissuade anyone from trying something new, but I must agree with Jenn99 and Margaret99 that there telling people there is a cure for fibromyalgia is somewhat irresponsible. To my knowledge there is as yet no cure for fibromyalgia, much less one that works for all. What there are though is plenty of people who claim they have cures and that we just need to follow their instructions to the letter, however many times that changes, and often at a huge expense. We are all different and one thing that is obvious on this site is what works for 1 does not necessarily work for many. We can only suggest things and allow people to try them if they want. After my experiences over more than 40 years now, I've learned to be very wary of new things. I had 1 so called professional who was selling super expensive vitamin & mineral supplements instuct me to take larger and larger doses of Calcium for constipation which just kept getting worse and worse. I knew Calcium was constipation, and Magnesium helped relieve it, and I told her that. She argued thar I was wrong, so finally I looked it up. Just as I had learned in nurses training, she was wrong and I was right. I never went back.
That a very minor story of loss of time and money because of bad advise but it makes a point, that not everyone who claims they know, actually does know what works. I believe we do need to be extra cautious when trying things. We are vulnerable and we want so badly to be well again.

No one has ever told me there is a cure for Fibromyalgia. This doctor healed herself from MS and specializes in autoimmune disorders. I never stated this is a cure for all, my masseuse had referred her to me and had many patients that had improved from the Wahls Diet. I just spoke to my GI and he said he felt it was a difficult diet to follow, but has had many patients who are doing much better. I just like to share what I learned to help the Fibro Community! I only want the best for all my Fibro friends, medications have given me severe adverse reactions. I don’t want the same for my friends! I want only the best and safest route for my friends!
