Does Physical Therapy Make You Worse?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’ve tried multiple times and it’s never worked for any of my issues. Currently I have tail bone pain when I sit. It feels like a bruise which is different from my normal symptoms. Usually I have deep aching nerve pains unrelated to movement or pressure so I figured it was mechanical in nature. I’ve done pelvic PT, and PT for my low back. They recently did dry needling and I’m in more pain than ever. I am now going to a pain clinic for shots, but they want an mri because I’ve had a benign tumor… read more

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for Fibromyalgia, but unfortunately it can make it worse before it gets better. It's important to keep at it and increase the amount you do gradually, not all at once. When I was doing physical therapy I found a lot of improvement, since the disuse of your muscles can cause de-conditioning, which makes the pain worse. I constantly have horrible pain in my glutes (I think it's located in my piriformis and/or gluteus minimus), but I don't think it's tailbone pain. Stretching and using magnesium spray can help a bit (if it's muscular like mine), but nothing makes it go away.

i can't help you with the tailbone pain. i can tell you it has nothing to do with fibromyalgia. even the fact that fibro makes pain amplified still doesn't make sense why you even have it. therre are things that can heal the fibro but i have just recently came across my own mix of things. it's hard to know where to even look if nobody tells you what to try. even then you have so many people telling you something works great only to find out they were trying to get in your wallet. recently i have found ayurvedic medicine. before it i began to take vitamins. i focused on multi, vit d vit c, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and twice the recommended dose of vit b sublingual. just the vitamins helped. once i added the herbs and a nightly dose of milk (yes milk) for sleep i began to get back on track. i found out about ayurvedic medicine which takes a mind/body approach. it's an ancient medicine of india. self massage was added more recently. it was working greatly but it was also causing major headaches. i suppose i have a lot of built up toxins in my body. i feel like a different person. you've probably heard that before but i'm not asking for money. don't give up hope. i've had it for over 10 years and am just now getting on track.

A lot of us probably try to deal with things by ignoring them but it never works. Try to take it one step at a time and focus on the now and not the future so much.

Pretending that you don't have something going on, could make things worse. Address each symptom and get it taken care of please.

Wow I have the same type of tailbone pain too. I have for years now, it comes and goes depending on how much I sit. It started when I worked in a call center sitting for hours at a time - the managers wouldn't let us stand up until break time. I got it checked out but they didn't find any issue and the humiliation of having a male doctor rush me to show him the area made me not want to deal with it ever again. It improved when i left that job but as a fibro patient we do have to sit/rest quite a bit so it will always come and go. I feel your paing girl, I'm so sorry you feel so disheartened.
The only thing i can share is that last year i was prescribed amitriptyline for anxiety and my doctor hoped it would also help my fibro pain. It made a huge difference for me mentally and I've had less fibro flares. This year i started walking to get exercise. I'm up to 30-40 minute walks as often as possible and i really enjoy it. Whether it's around a track or just around my little town. If i rest too much i flare, if i do too much i flare. So walking is perfect for me. I also did an elimination diet this year so now i only eat a handful of things which has helped my digestive symptoms tremendously. Basically I'm doing everything in my power and it's helping. That's all i know 🤷🏻‍♀️
I hope things improve for you soon, lovely 💜
