My experience with the so-called authoritative FM specialist in Tokyo was horrible. In December of 2014, he was only focusing on the 18 tender points to diagnose FM. His biography showed that he studied rheumatology in the U.S., but he didn't seem to keep up with the newer diagnostic criteria or continue his research. It's easier when people have at least heard of it. I've created FM awareness cards to carry around with me so that I can let people know that I am actually hurting and exhausted while interacting with them.

In Japan, the majority have never even heard of it. In Oregon, USA, I've met many people who are familiar with it. I got responses like, "You have FM? I am sorry.... my sister has that, too." "My girlfriends is on a gluten free diet for FM. You might want to try it, too!" I was impressed.
