To be clear I haven't officially been diagnosed with this but I'm suspecting I have it. I recalled today I had this when I started with fibro like 20+ years ago. Difficulty swallowing food and liquid and only happens during the most severe fibro flare ups. Instead of the normal automatic function of the muscles contracting and gently pushing the contents down to the stomach it feels like it gets stuck and then dragged down. Very unpleasant, uncomfortable and currently compounding the… read more
I had similar symptoms in July but it was more like a lump in throat feeling and swelling. I had a barium study done where you sit in front of a X-ray machine and they monitor food with barium in to see how your esophagus processes food, if it has trouble going down. Everything turned out normal. Right now I have a tightness in neck feeling along with clicking noises like if my larynx gets out of place. Had CT and MRI done, found nothing so I’m guessing it a part of fibro. Only way to know is to see your doctor or gastroenterologist and get tested. But many things can effect our digestive system.
My throat does get a tight feeling at times, especially when taking meds but I don’t have digestive issues. I always thought it was due to allergies but will have to ask my doc. Unfortunately I have a cast iron stomach. Went to a new breakfast place today and had a fried Oreo and chicken and waffles. We live in SC and they are two southern dishes I always wanted to try. OMG - SOOO GOOD. I say unfortunately because you don’t get food anywhere like you do here. Fried and sugar are food groups. I’m a sugarholic which is bad for FM and bad in general.
If you are like me and eat anything at anytime and suffering from GERD or other stomach or other stomach issues - get it checked out.
Had similar myself. Difficult to swallow, general throat feeling swollen but not obviously swollen from looking. As with hobbit, only tends to manifest when other fibro symptoms are elevated.
@A MyFibroTeam Member Thanks for the link. That's good advice on not pinning everything strange on fibro. However, in my case it only occurs when I have a serious fibro flare and has existed for 20+ years. I'm fairly sure if it was part of something more serious I would've known by now. I've actually spoken to my GP tonight (forgot he was phoning) and he said if it's still an issue in a fortnight they'll do a barium swallow test.
My myasthenia Gravis caused me to not be able to swallow even saliva. It caused severe muscle weakness. Not sure if that is a direction you might want to ask your doctor about.
