Lyrica
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does lyrica affect kidney function-I have low sodium in my blood-hyponatremia. I also hold water esp. in my abdomen since I have been on lyrica. Also does it increase muscle pain and muscle tone? Thanks, FrancesMary

Thanks for reply ErinMurphy-I was on diuretics 2015-2017-then hospitalized with very low sodium. The kidney doctor told me they are very hard on the kidneys, and I am never to take them again. I am on a water restricted diet. I have a bad blood pressure problem-take 3 pills a day for that. As with many of us with fibro for a long time, we seem to have a lot of co-morbidities-and long term medication use too. No fun. I agree lyrica is a nasty drug-I have taken since 2011-I am unable to get off of it. I've tried many times. Thanks, FrancesMary

Thanks Erin for the reply-I tried to come off lyrica in 2015, when my ins. stopped covering it. I had terrible restless legs, total insomnia, diarrhea, dizziness, anxiety, hallucinations etc. That was even with tittering. My doctor wanted me to go back on the gabapentin, after I stopped the lyrica. Now I hear that is in a "pain contract". Good thing I didn't go back to that. I had burning nerve pain across my upper back and shoulders in 2011, and a series of accidents, that put my on lyrica in 2011. I have taken advils, and other meds for over 25 years. I'm sure that any of that could have affected the kidneys. I'm sorry you have a similar issue-it is no fun, especially to be thirsty all of the time. Frances Mary

FrancesMary, yes I'm do a water restricted diet also. My kidneys only have 50% functionality on a good day. Lyrica is broken down in the kidneys. Most meds are broken down in the liver, which can regenerate. But once the kidneys are damaged it's a job top know your numbers and cross the fingers.

You said you can't come of Lyrica, why? I took several months to come off of Lyrica. Honestly, now that I'm off I don't notice much difference. My feet hurt more but good shoes (sketchers on the go 660) if I'm doing a shopping trip. But lidocaine cream helps. I saw Aspercream has a product with lidocaine in it specifically for the feet. I gonna give it a shot.

@A MyFibroTeam Member and @MarcialHitt Lyrica is broken down in the kidneys where most are broken down in the liver. I was given a ton of anti-inflammatory meds before I was diagnosed with Fibro. I was sent into Kidney Failure, that was 10 + years ago. My nephrologist (kidney doctor) agreed if I was on the lowest does it wouldn't hurt my already hurt kidneys. I've since gotten off Lyrica. NASTY DRUG! I've felt no difference. But my kidney numbers are better.

@A MyFibroTeam Member since you are retaining so much water which is not good and hard on the body, has any doctor given you a diuretic? Until you speak to a doctor, water with lemon, and black tea with lemon will help you expel some of that water, they are natural diuretics.
