Rheumatologist - Do I Need To See One?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi
I was diagnosed with fibro about a month ago. I'm 46/f.

My primary care NP referred me to a few rheumatologists in my area that accept my insurance.
I called them, they said they do NOT assess for or treat patients with Fibromyalgia anymore.

I went to the Medicare website (my insurance) and looked up other rheums. in the area, called each one, and was turned away by each one.

It was suggested that I go to a pain management doctor, which I have done (1st and 2nd opinions as I did not feel… read more

I was diagnosed many years ago by a rheumatollogist and a couple other doctors. I have not been back to them since. I have my primary take care of most of my issues(hypothyroidism etc) i go to a pain management doctor for pain meds. She is very understanding. I hope you can find a good pm doctor in your area. Good luck.

My Rheumatologist did confirm Fibro but he really didn't want to help me. My Fibro Specialist was an Internal Medicine doctor and he wanted to help me. He referred me to many Specialists that diagnosed many underlying and overlapping conditions.

Try to find an Internal Medicine doctor and a Pain Management doctor that have empathy and want to help you feel better

It may take a while. It took me two years for most of my diagnostics to be completed but it is well worth it.

My daughter, 25, and I, 54, now have a quality of life that we didn't have before!

I was also diagnosed a month ago and have gone through the same thing. I called the hospitals and talked to a patient advocate. He was able to get me into Internal medicine within a week and was diagnosed and she is handling my care. Good luck and I am glad you found this site.

In my opinion you don’t need a rheumatologist. Your primary care doctor can diagnose and treat your fibro just fine. One thing they can’t treat though as chronic pain and you will need to go to a pain management clinic for that. But they can treat your other symptoms.
Remember there is no cure. They only treat our symptoms.
I would highly recommend starting to experiment with natural treatments also. It will benefit you in the long run. Much luck!
