Every Spring when I start getting more sun exposure my skin gets very itchy. I getting tiny bumps and it feels like poison ivy. But after my skin starts getting use to the sun the itching goes away, usually by June. I've tried allergy pills and hydro-cortisone cream but it barely helps. There are so many possibilities that could cause your skin itching in the sun. Some medications can make you photosensitive and there is also Lupus of the skin. Also diabetes, thyroid problems and even menopause can all make skin itchy. Try to start your exposure gradually and make sure you wear sunscreen. I often get a prickly and burning sensation when I am out in the sun and my skin looks blotchy. You should maybe bring this up with your doctor to see if anything you are taking could be causing your symptoms.
It has a mild effect on my blood sugar, which is very well controlled so my doctor doesn't hesitate. The relief is almost immediate.
I have to get a dexamethosone (steroid) shot every year. It allows me to enjoy the sun after the initial sun poisoning. Good luck and gentle hugs.
I use a combination cr that I make on my own, I was a pharmacy tech for 40yrs and make my own for this.. a 1oz tube of benadryl cr and a 1oz tube of hydrocortisone cr 1% and mix them together then put it in a container . stir well before each use. I cannot be in the sun . it does make my arms itch. and I have trouble when I take a shower but only spring & summer. I use it after shower for itching. feels like a burlap bag is rubbing my arms
I've heard using selsen blue on it helps though I haven't tried it myself. A friend went to the doctor for hers and he said it was a fungus aggravated by the sun. She had to take antifungal meds, but you could try a spray for athletes foot and see if that helps. Good luck.
