Still being relatively new to the Fibro scene I wondered what I can do to get me back to how I used to be or damned close to it as the depression is not doing well at the moment.
Does exercise really help and if so what type as swimming is out for me due to my epilepsy but will try anything. Am having major pain with my left hip, feels like I'm being stabbed in it so don't know if it's arthritis playing up or if it is a trapped nerve due to the Fibro.
Pls, pls, pls, any advice will be so… read more
Hi Anne, I find it does help a lot. I fought it for many years thinking it would make me worse. I was surprised to find out that it is very helpful when done correctly. We can't charge into it like the workout warriors of the world though. We have to start slow and build to a program that works for our fibrobodies. Cardio, yoga, barre, strength, etc. there are so many types of exercise we can try.
Everyone is different, but what I have found works (for me) is walking, recumbant biking, & 10 minute exercise videos on the internet. There are several sites, you can search for "low impact 10 minute workouts" and it will bring most of them up. If I am having a good day I can string these activities together for a 30 minute total. I try not to go over that because (for me) it wears me out. I sometimes have to spilt it into two 15 minute workouts, depending on the day.
I hope you find the right combo that works for you. Take it slow and easy. Gentle Hugs!!
Unfortunately going back to normal, like you used to be may not happen. You have to find a new normal, one that works with Fibro. I find yoga is a good exercise for the stretching. You have to learn to take things slow even on a good day. For the pain there are many different medications you just have to experiment.
Soft hugs help to!
Hi Anne, I agree with Kathy moving helps keep from seizing up. Start out slowly and gently with stretches and walking or things your body accepts. The low impact exercises or stretches with exercise tubing work quite well to start you on your way. Your body will let you know what works and what doesn't. I have days when I am almost normal and others when I can hardly move. I needed to learn to pace myself and build up gradually. That slow, easy gentle movement is the best.
They have yoga & stretching classes made for us . I do some yoga at home helps, I know it hurt but a slow walk helps too.
For me, YES. The key for me is to listen very carefully to my body. I don't do sweaty, cardio workouts anymore, but gentle yoga, pilates to strenthen, and very light weights are the perfect combo for me. Short walks feel nice too. The first 5-10 minutes is a little uncomfortable, but then I feel way better than when I started.
